This project attempts to create a Python program that can retrieve values from the Microbit sensors through the serial interface. It is also designed in such a way that can allow it to be imported and used by other python programs.

Micro:Bit Serial Bridge for Accelerometer Data (not for production use)

A very early experiment for for communicating with a BBC micro:bit over serial, enabling real-time accelerometer data and gesture detection from a host computer.

This project was built a very long time ago, and as such It should not be relied on.

What it does

Reads live accelerometer values (X, Y, Z axes) from a micro:bit
Detects gestures in real time — shake, tilt, freefall, face up/down, and G-force levels (3g, 6g, 8g)
Supports both is_gesture (current state) and was_gesture (historical check)
Auto-discovers the micro:bit's COM port by USB VID/PID

How it works

The project has two parts:

microbit.py — runs on the micro:bit itself, listens for commands over UART, and responds with sensor data
computer.py — runs on the host machine, sends commands over serial and parses the responses

Requirements

BBC micro:bit
Python 3
pyserial

pip install pyserial

Usage

Flash microbit.py onto your micro:bit using the micro:bit Python editor, then run:

python computer.py

The host script will automatically find the micro:bit and begin polling for gesture data.
